"And from experience, I can tell you that a man in a safety vest standing in the middle of a road waving a red flag and/or a lit red fusee do sometimes seem invisible to clueless drivers."

I can attest to that statement also being in the MOW craft myself.
Countless times of people who have almost run us over  or almost hit the track cars flagging crossings for equipment moves.
Yes we do have to give traffic the right of way but once clear and equipment is going across and vehicles that show up need to be  stopped..
You have to  deal with the arrogant, the drunk, and the oblivious drivers!!!

And agreed that kids age has nothing to do with this whole story.
He is 19 so what!!!
He is in a great job, learning a skill..
Being a surfacing foreman myself working that machine is no joke!!!

And especially when the driver is looking at the phone or having a very animated conversation.  If the driver was 83, something else may have been happening.  I agree, age of the tamper operator has nothing to do with this.  Even without the lights activated, a large yellow machine across the roadway would suggest the need to slow down and think.

I was 19 when I hired on the railroad. Many times in that first year, I was put in the engineer's seat (by the engineer) on both 125-car freights and 80-mph passenger trains. If an 83 year old person drove into the side of any of those trains, it certainly wouldn't have anything to do with my age. I don't understand why the tamper operator's age was even mentioned: it's irrelevant.

That being said, because track equipment is normally made to NOT activate track circuits, the crossing protection may not have activated. Therefore, some other form of protection for crossings must be provided, which the article does not mention. And from experience, I can tell you that a man in a safety vest standing in the middle of a road waving a red flag and/or a lit red fusee do sometimes seem invisible to clueless drivers.

BELGRADE, Maine —

Two people were injured around 6:25 a.m. Thursday when a car hit a train tamper in the town of Belgrade.

The incident occurred on train tracks crossing Augusta Road near Route 27, a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.

William Bockman, 83, of Smithfield was traveling south on Route 27 in a blue Hyundai Elantra when he crashed into the railroad tamper, the release stated.

The train tamper was being operated by 19-year-old Bryce Willette of Madison, the release said.

According to the release, Bockman was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. Willette “received minor injuries,” the release reported.

The southbound lane on Route 27 in Belgrade was closed to oncoming traffic following the crash, and the Belgrade Fire Department directed traffic through the road’s northbound lane, the release stated.

The scene was cleared by 10:30 a.m., Moss told NEWS CENTER Maine Thursday morning.

The release stated the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
