While mention of estimated speeds of trains is not to be posted in this group, I can say that the maximum authorized speed for any freight trains on Pan Am is 40 mph. Yes, there is a restriction through OOB, but as long as I have been retired, I don't recall exactly what it is.

May possibly be sitting on the main at Ayer... can only make out one backward unit on it but EOT still on the rear and flashing.  Looks like 22k backing into the yaaahd via east wye.

Yes, I would assume that's why 7545 is up there.

Thank you Mr. Sample,
Only thing is I don't belong to Facebook or any of those similar sites.  I did when they first started.  Way too stupid to bother with.
I do realize that most of the sightings in New England tell one another,  and NOT the whole group,  what is coming, when, where, etc.  I'll live.  Already been there and done all that stuff.
   Your Plainville reports are interesting.
Beats hell out of looking for the Photo Shopped birdie on the choo-choo pictures.

Hi to all !   I have a friend coming from out of state (Indiana) and will NOT be at B'vale tomorrow. Hope to see all next week.

I-93 North to Dascomb Rd exit, head east about 1/2 mile and take right onto Clark Rd. Depot is straight ahead next to crossing gates.

Ballardvale (Haverhill/Western route) MA Depot is an excellent local spot for railfanning, because:
1) Served by three railroads.
2) Excellent sightlines from left to right especially for photos and video.
3) Ample FREE parking.
4) Two restaurants *, 1 variety store, all trackside with windows and restrooms.
5) RxR gates alert of trains approaching from the south, talking detector alerts of trains from the north.

I will be there on Friday from @ noon to supper time. Look for a very dark green foreign sedan, MA tag 3364.  George Kenson and friends usually appear, and ALL are invited to stop by and say hello !
                                                                      Very best,  Paul Stephen 🙂
* The Ballardvale Cafe is operated by Chris Tirone's Aunt Sharron, and has GREAT carrot cake !

Alco S-5

Chuck Petlick

I just got home from another tour of the mid-west.  Monday I was at Bellevue, Ohio where the Alco S-5 has been sitting.  This unit was reported to be painted into an "as delivered" scheme or maybe a B&M scheme.
When I was out there about 6 weeks ago,  it was inside a building "getting worked on."
About 3 weeks ago,  it was moved outside and some paint work had been performed on the sill area in bright yellow.  Monday it was still outdoors as a NKP steam engine had been running people back and forth this past weekend and the steamer was kept inside the said building overnight.
About that same 3 weeks ago.  I was talking with a fellow that seemed knowlegable.  He was of the opinion the Alco was going to, I think he told me, Youngstown Steel, to be on display there.  I may have got the steel company incorrectly.
Anyway, a lot more work needs to be done on this unit before it is pretty again.
No more reports on this subject until the Spring ???
